land acknowledgment & our values

Beyond Binary Therapy sits on the traditional homelands of the people of the Council of Three Fires: the Ojibwe, the Potawatomi, and the Odawa; as well as the Menominee, Miami, and Ho-Chunk nations. We acknowledge, honor, and celebrate the original people of the land on which our practice exists and the Indigenous people who remain on this land today.

A Land acknowledgement alone, however, is not enough to truly support Indigenous communities. We live on stolen land with a deep history of genocide. Part of our therapeutic work is working to support the people that our nation has oppressed. Click here for more ways to support!

Our Values

We are Human

We believe, as therapists and clients, that we are first and foremost all human. We all have good intentions and opportunities for growth and expansion. As such we believe that therapists make mistakes and are not experts, but rather humans who make themselves available to care for and empower other humans. We are all humans navigating life on this Earth.

Transparency

Therapy can be a mysterious process, and we believe in empowering people to better understand that process and how the therapeutic space works. We believe informed consent is crucial and that you deserve to understand what is going on in your sessions and should feel empowered to ask questions where there is confusion. Many terms in therapy can be confusing, please ask if you ever do not understand what we are talking about.

Autonomy & Decolonialism

Colonialism and Systems of Oppression exist to cause us to question ourselves and believe that we have no power. We believe in our personal power and ability to live our lives as we want to. Our goal as therapists is not to make you conform to societal values and beliefs, but to empower you to discover how you want to live. We believe every person is different and thus wellness looks different for everyone.

Personal is Political (collective liberation & social justice)

We believe that the personal is political. We believe our personal experiences and beliefs are directly connected to our political standing and influence. Doing personal work is political, and we believe when we discover personal liberation, collective liberation is imminent. Acting justly and challenging one another to be active change-makers is part of this work.

Identity Celebration and Contextualized Care

We believe that the identities that you hold should not just be acknowledged but celebrated. Our identities inform how we exist in this world, and we believe those identities should also inform your therapeutic experience. Your identities will be celebrated in this space, and your care will honor where you are coming from.

Unconditional Positive Regard

We believe that we are all deserving kindness and space to be heard and understood. All parts of ourselves deserve honor and to be embraced, even the parts we shame and hide. In this space, we hope to create safety for you to exist and see yourself more fully.
